Danny Myburgh – (FynArts Festival, Hermanus)

We came across Danny Myburgh’s work in the Originals Art Gallery in Hermanus. The curator was excellent and guided us through the gallery sharing very interesting insights and information.

I was immediately drawn to these two pieces:

Ghosts of the Past 1’ and ‘Ghosts of the Past 2’ – (oil and enamel on canvas)

Without even reading the info about her paintings, I was taken straight back to my childhood: camping out with family and neighbours, sitting around the braai (bbq) with bugs flipping and flapping around the Cadac gas lamp – the bugs being stupidly drawn in by the light and to their untimely and unnecessary death. I could be mesmerised for hours, and always thought it a dark and macabre story. Danny captures these memories (maybe mine) with such delicacy, that that exact moment seemed real again.

  • “Danny explores how the formation of early childhood memories affects us for the rest of our lives and she has used the shipping container in her work as both a metaphor and vessel for these memories.” – Excerpt from her bio at the FynArts exhibition

Back home I researched Danny’s work and was bowled over at her talent, her variety and accomplishments. She really is an artist worth following.
