I’m a creative, inside and out. I’m always looking for new ways to express myself or get my hands busy and dirty.

If I’m not drawing, painting canvasses or ceramics, beading, collaging, doing embroidery, knitting, gardening, writing short stories, blogs and poetry, I’m searching the internet and magazines for other ways to be an arty-farty.

I studied graphic design at the Cape Town Technikon (now CPUT) and after working a short while in the industry, I started my own graphics and printing company in Hout Bay. After 20 years I sold it, completed a TEFL course (teaching English as a foreign language) and headed overseas volunteering – doing wild and crazy things along the way.

I taught English in Spain and Mexico, learned to catch and microchip rattle snakes, banded humming birds, restored furniture, graded eggs on a free-range chicken farm, rescued dogs, rescued llamas and so much more. It was probably the most exciting and fulfilling time of my life.

Back to reality and the pension fund! I started lecturing graphic design at CPUT. I never realised there was an ‘art’ teacher within me and I absolutely love teaching. I cherish that ‘light bulb’ moment I see on my students’ faces. I enjoy encouraging them and at the same time pushing them gently, showing them what they are capable of, and that their first option is not necessary the best option. I love seeing them discover their talent and learn to express it freely without fear or boundaries. Most importantly, I believe, that it should be fun.

For me, art or creativity is like therapy. While ‘in the zone’ I’m utterly free. I get lost in the process and time races on. I always come out the other side, feeling happier, energised and more relaxed … and often hungry!
