Leah’s Birthday Party

Leah’s Birthday Party

Leah and 8 of her friends celebrated her ninth birthday with a painting party at In The Zone in Plumstead.

Her chosen theme was animals. To avoid everyone painting the same animal, we asked the girls to think of unusual animals. To help them along, we asked the following questions:

  • Does it have legs? How many?
  • What is its skin covered with? Fur? Scales? Feathers?
  • Is it huge? Or teeny weeny?
  • Does it have patterns on it? Spots? Stripes? Patches?
  • Does it have a tail? What kind of tail? Short? Long? Fat, skinny or curly?
  • How does it breathe?
  • Where does it live? On land? Underground? In the Air?

Once they’d decided on an animal, they had to write it down and hide it under their canvas. The next step was to draw the outline of their animal, and then trace it onto their canvas.

  • We had two reindeer!
  • A fish! An octopus!
  • Two elephants!
  • A giraffe!
  • A koala!
  • And an owl! What a hoot!

Then the painting began. Brushes and fingers were used to mix and mush paint onto their canvasses. Detail was added with sticks and smaller brushes. The girls did an excellent job of mixing their colours. There were loads of giggles and smiles.

At In The Zone, we do not touch their paintings. The kids go home with a piece of art which is 100% their own work! The results were amazing! They can all be very proud of the painting they took home.
