Meet John Milazi, our Mentee

Meet John Milazi, our Mentee

Right in the beginning of In The Zone, Rose & Kim discussed various programs of ‘giving back’ to the creative world, and this wonderful opportunity dropped into our laps.

Jean, from the Red Gallery recognised that John had raw talent and was aware, that if given a little artistic guidance, John could reap bountiful rewards. We were introduced to John who has become one of our two mentees.

John is flourishing under our guidance. His confidence is growing day by day and it’s beautiful to watch the process.

Here is a short interview with John.

ITZ: What’s your full name and where are you from?

  • John  Milazi from Mangochi, Malawi

ITZ: When did you start painting?

  • In 2014 … (ITZ: Oh my word, only 4 years ago!)
  • When I was a young boy (10-11 years old) I was fascinated with the illustrations in our school text books and that’s when I started drawing.

ITZ: What do you paint when you’re at home?

  • Animals, landscapes and portraits. I paint bright, graphic animals and portraits on the back of denim jackets for a client in Johannesburg.

ITZ: What inspires you?

  • Nature and the patterns in nature, like honeycomb.

ITZ: How did you hear about In The Zone?

  • Jean at the Red Gallery in Steenberg suggested I needed a little training.

ITZ: Who is your favourite artist or what kind of art do you like?

  • God is the greatest of all artists! Just amazing! God has done everything before.

ITZ: What have you learned at In The Zone so far?

  • I’m learning to ‘look’ and ‘see’ things in detail, about light and shadow, about mixing colours rather than working straight from the tube. I’m also learning different paint techniques. I’ve learned to find something inside myself, what excites me etc, rather than just copy. Everyone has their own self-expression and individuality.

ITZ: What do you think of ITZ?

  • Rose & Kim encourage me to express myself. They’re very talented and artistic. I miss In The Zone when I go home. I’m impressed with the ‘team building’ at In The Zone – that we are working together and helping each other. Kim & Rose don’t hide their methods or techniques but are willing to share. We are learning from each other.

ITZ: What is the most interesting thing you’ve recently read or watched that is related to art?

  • I Googled the ‘Jesus’ painting that sold for $450 million!

ITZ: What is you artistic dream?

  • To be the best artist ever!!! I can’t live a day or two without picking up a brush.
