Project: Doing the ‘Pollock’ at In The Zone

Project: Doing the ‘Pollock’ at In The Zone

Splashtastic!

Our In The Zone evening artists wanted to ‘throw’ paint and go abstract crazy! So we encouraged them to do so.

Step 1

Choosing a set of colours, the artists covered their entire canvas in paint and blended them. While the paint was still wet, they used different objects to scrape patterns in certain areas.

Step 2

Mixing contrasting colours, our ‘Jackson Pollocks’ then had fun, flicking, tossing, and throwing paint at their canvas in a crazy but controlled way. They layered up their speckles and splashes which looked awesome. The crazier they got, the louder the laughter and the bigger the mess!

Step 3

Once paint had dried we suggested to each artist to use some collage – add some text or pieces of text to their painting making sure that their colour families were considered.

Step 4

We introduced them to masking and stamping to create more interest and more ‘Pollock’ plops were added.

Step 5

Standing back and admiring their paintings they became aware that certain areas were looking great and others not so much. This happens when random paint throwing occurs. We discussed different ideas and techniques to remedy these problems and they each went ahead and played some more.

Step 6

This was a fun, messy and crazy project. The adults sure had fun being kids again! And really, that’s what it’s all about. Art should be pure escapism … so let In The Zone be your escape!

There is no abstract art.
You must always start with something.
Afterwards you can remove all traces of reality. – Pablo Picasso
