Rama’s 41st Birthday Party!

Rama’s 41st Birthday Party!

Celebrating at In The Zone with a ‘Transformation’ themed birthday party, was Rama and 5 of her special friends. Rama chose the theme and suggested a Monarch butterfly image to paint as a piece of collaborative art where everyone has to paint part of the whole.

Kim & Rose did some Monarch butterfly research and found a beautiful poem to start the proceedings. Each guest was given an A2 canvas and a section of a funky butterfly design to paint. Rama’s group of ladies had to carefully liaise with each other so that all their lines and shapes matched up and that similar colours and techniques were used.

This kind of project encourages conversation, improves listening, and challenges each individual to be part of a ‘team’ and work together towards one end product: a beautiful & vibrant painting.

There was lots of champagne drinking, laughing, reminiscing …. and painting! There were also quite a few moments of complete silence as they all got ‘lost’ in the zone.

The final, bright, collaborative piece was framed and presented back to Rama to take home and enjoy.

“Transformation” by Dean Jackson

When she transformed
into a butterfly,
the caterpillar spoke
not of her beauty,
but of her weirdness.
They wanted her
to change back
into what she
always had been.
… But she had wings.

The ‘Transformation’ theme was chosen to represent all the wonderful changes that have occurred in Rama’s life since she arrived in South Africa and also the growth and changes that have happened in her guests’ lives since she had met them.

The Monarch butterfly was chosen to represent transformation as it morphs from a striped caterpillar into an iconic, orange, winged butterfly which migrates through life on an incredible journey of discovery, overcoming a multitude of obstacles but always ‘swarming’ with its friends for support and protection.
