SASA – 112th Annual Exhibition

SASA – 112th Annual Exhibition

The opening of the 112th Annual Exhibition by SASA was on Friday 24th August, 2018 and what an occasion it was! Those in the know arrived way before the invitation time so that the could view all the amazing artwork before the masses arrived and blocked their view. And masses arrived. By 6.30pm all three halls were packed.

Virginia MacKenny* opened the event with a powerful and inspiring talk which had everyone riveted. I always admire those that can stand up and talk in front of crowds, and wing it. It’s such a gift. Virginia then handed out the winners trophies and certificates.

The winners were:

  • Helena Jordaan – Best Oil: ‘My Naam is Moreblessing’
  • Jeremy Day – Best Acrylic: ‘Peace in the Valley’
  • Suzanne Fortgens – Best Drawing: ‘The Firemen of Cape Town Brigade’
  • Pam Quinlan – Best Watercolour: ‘Toadstools’
  • Christopher Reid – Best Pastel: ‘Robberg Complements’
  • Penny Steynor – Best Sculpture: ‘Attack’
  • Marilyn Southey – Best Print Media: ‘The Pool’
  • Ali Lauren Melck – Best Mixed Media: ‘Sunbird Study’

Who got to exhibit?

Prior to this event, all SASA members were invited to submit a maximum of 3 works and deliver them to Rustenburg Girls’ High School. A weekend of judging took place. The judges were: Virginia MacKenny, Gail Dorje and Liesl Hartmann. On the Sunday evening artists could collect their work and be told whether their pieces were chosen or not.

At the exhibition it was truly remarkable to see the variety of artwork on display. There was something for everyone. See photos below (some pics are whole paintings and others are close-up details). These will just give you a taste of what’s on offer.
