The Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Art Award – (FynArts Festival, Hermanus)

Next on our stop on the Hermanus FynArts Festival was the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Art Competition exhibition at the Bouchard Finlayson Wine Farm.

Unfortunately, the signposting was not great and even though we got to the parking area at the cellars, we weren’t convinced we were at the right place so left and tried again. We ended up back in the car park and after a while we decided, the exhibition must be here. Inside, in didn’t get much better. There were no signs directing us to the art. It was a sort of find-it-if-you-can scenario, and lucky we did!

All the artworks were displayed on the front side of the vats. All works had to be completed in a circle (max 60cm).

  • The theme for the competition was: ‘Reflections’

We saw all kinds of ‘reflections’ and a variety of mediums. We were most impressed.

First Prize (R20 000)

  • Paul Birchall with his piece titled: ‘Inner Spaces’ – (oil on canvas)
  • His rendition of a silver teapot reflecting the interior was interesting and I went on to research that his beloved teapot has been painted in almost 40 or more different interiors.

Second Prize

  • Drummond Murphy with his piece titled: ‘Thelonius Monk: Reflections 1952’ – (acrylic on canvas)

Merit Awards

  • Stefan Blom for ‘Into the Light Fantastic’ – (acid etching)

  • Desmond Smart for ‘Memories, Dreams & Star Rats’ – (wood carving)

My Favourite

  • I loved Valeria Talian’s – ‘Look & Reflect’ – (glass & mosaic, mixed media). I found it fascinating and captivating all at once. There was just so much to see and read and the colours were really well chosen. Even the edge of the circle was covered in little glass words. The dexterity for this kind of detailing was amazing.

Works of art often last forever, or nearly so.
But exhibitions themselves, especially gallery exhibitions,
are like flowers; they bloom and then they die,
then exist only as memories, or pressed in magazines and books.’
