What-A-Lot-Of-Dots-I-Got!

Whoohoo! – Our first Facebook competition winner, Kim Cassidy and friend, Gabrielle, joined us at In The Zone for an acrylics-on-canvas painting project.

Firstly, the group rummaged through magazines tearing out pieces of colour to form an interesting ‘family’ of colours. Our artists then mixed their colours and painted their canvas backgrounds. While paint dried, they sketched out their tree shapes and wonky houses and buildings. The idea for both was that nothing was exact, but rather simple and niave. Everyone’s work was completely different, which was fantastic. It’s important at In The Zone that each individual expresses themselves in the own special way.

Once compositions were completed, they traced their layouts onto dried canvasses using good ole, reliable carbon paper. The silhouetted trees and branches were painted in flat black acrylic paint. Then the dotty-madness began! Our artists started off slowly and as they grew more confident, they went completely dot-spot-crazy! They spotted and dotted, and dipped and dotted and eventually we had to gently remove their dotting sticks at 9pm so we could all go home.

The results of layers of colours and dots of all different sizes, makes for a very interesting, textured, niave and happy painting, which they were both thoroughly chuffed with. For some, who thought they were not artists at all, we proved them wrong and they’ve now found a new passion to follow.
