Marion McNay Art Museum, USA

Opened in 1954, the Marion McNay Art Museum is situated in downtown San Antonio, Texas, USA. I had the privilege of spending a number of hours getting lost in all the modern works that were beautifully displayed in this museum – for me, one of the best in the world in terms of display and appreciation.

I loved how they arranged the various works in themes, like portraits, landscapes, dreamscapes etc. It was then really interesting to compare the different artists, their approaches and techniques.

This museum focuses mainly on 19th and 20th century artworks, including masterpieces by Picasso, O’Keeffe, Gauguin, Matisse, Cezanne, to name a few.

For different reasons, here are a few that caught my eye:

Names of artists have been hyperlinked for more information about the artist.

Paul Wonner (1920 – 2008)
‘Seven Views of the Model With Flowers’ (1962) – Oil on Canvas

This triptych was extremely painterly and his use of colour, although muted was interesting. He is well known for his abstract expressionism.
Georgio O’Keeffe (1887 – 1986)
(Left) ‘From The Plains l’ (1953) – Oils on Canvas
(Right) ‘Goat’s Head’ (1957) – Oil on Canvas

O’Keeffe’s work appeared simple at first, but standing back, the viewer is drawn in by her ability to create mood and intrigue.
(Left)
Paul Gauguin (1848 – 1903)
‘Sister of Charity’ (1902) – Oil on Canvas

(Right)
Raoul Dufy (1877 – 1953)
‘Golfe Juan’ (1927) – Oil on Canvas – Mounted on panel

(Left)
Theodoros Stamos (1922 – 1997)
‘Red Sea Terrace No. 1’ (1954) – Oil on Canvas
(Right)
Erik Benson (1974)
‘Dead Air’ (2009) – Acrylic on Canvas

Both these paintings were quite large and there was something in each that grabbed my attention. The powerful, abstract expression of Stamos’ painting had me staring at it for ages, while Benson’s gritty work bordered on grotesque, which really captured his subject matter. One could almost smell the ‘dead air’!

There was so much to see and appreciate at the McNay Museum which is difficult to put into one blog, so I will, in the next couple of weeks, select a few more paintings and exhibitions to share. Watch this space!
