McNay Museum: CANDE AGUILAR

McNay Museum: CANDE AGUILAR

Cande Aguilar (b. 1972) is a Mexican-American artist & musician from Texas, USA. He has a current installation at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio: April 2019.

His work immediately drew my attention. It’s big, bright and bold – full of confidence. He commonly refers to it as the barrioPOP style (his name), which is a combination of street art and popular culture. This is very much in evidence in his almost graffiti-like, expressive technique. These pieces were all part of the same installation.

‘Land of Peace’(2007) – Mixed media painting with found objects

He combines images from every day life, including cartoon characters in bright, graphic colours. The style is quirky and amusing and due their large size, these paintings are in-your-face! I absolutely love them.

‘Clear Skies’ (2018) – Mixed media

The whole presentation of Aguilar’s work put a smile on my face. He’s definitely an artist with a sense of humour, and one gets the impression that he thoroughly enjoys what he’s doing. Keep on painting Cande – your work is awesome!
