Project: Shapes & Colour

Project: Shapes & Colour

by Rose du Preez

Our Wednesday evening art classes are proving to be great fun.

Our first project was designed to combine exercises to ensure students practice skills that will stand them in good stead through their creative journey.

This first project helps facilitate the swap over from the left/logical side of the students’ brains to the right/creative side. This is called being “In The Zone”.

Students are taught brush skills and paint application techniques as well as developing “know how” in colour mixing and matching. Most students, but by no means all, are aware of basic colour combinations but all are always amazed at the more intricate combinations.

Students have great fun playing with paint and mixing vibrant new colours out of the basic primaries of red, blue and yellow. Students learn to build a “family of colours” to apply to their paintings. They also are encouraged to experiment as to when and where to apply accent or complimentary colours.

The next part of the process is will be practicing texture and patterns and using this knowledge in the final stage of their paintings.

In the end, students will go home with a painting that is both abstract and organic, filled with colour and pattern, created through laughter and camaraderie.
