Workshop: The Magic Box

Workshop: The Magic Box

Day 3 – In The Zone was back at HBIS with their ‘Magic Box’ project.

The learners got to choose a box and then a crazy 3D creature (a crab, a fish, a tarantula spider, or butterflies). Once they had chosen both, they were then asked to think about what kind of environment their creature would live in and design their box accordingly.

They first painted their boxes in one or two colours and let them dry outside while they planned their graphics. These were then traced onto their boxes using magic carbon paper.

We had the following beautiful story-boxes:

  • Scary spiders in a tree
  • Spiders in a sparkly web
  • Fish in a bowl with a sneaky cat watching
  • Crab on the seashore, with pirate map inside box
  • Colourful butterflies flying around a beautiful garden

Our little artists were again learning different colour mixes, paint techniques and how to put in detail with fingers, pens and sticks. Those who finished sooner than others, started painting the inside of their boxes.

Once their painting was complete, the learners stuck their 3D creature onto their box and then posed for photos.

What a wonderful project. Their boxes were awesome and a fantastic keep-sake for years to come!
